Society Membership
Benefits
A member society receives full benefits from the very beginning of its relationship with the Federation. The society selects a representative to serve on the Federation Council and this immediately brings the new society to the table on important policy matters and setting the direction for the Federation. The society’s name is printed on Federation letterhead, brochures, and the website to ensure acknowledgement of its role in promoting the behavioral sciences in all lobbying, advocacy, and related activities and events sponsored by the Federation. The Federation's Executive Director attends society annual meetings with regularity in order to keep abreast of what is important to the society and the science it represents. Also, the Washington staff accords high priority to contacts on any matter from Federation society board members, and they personally and quickly address that society's requests or concerns.

Dues
A society’s dues are based on the number of “relevant members” who belong to that society. A relevant member is any U.S. scientist, excluding student members.
We have a tiered dues structure, such that larger societies pay more for each of their relevant members than our smaller societies pay. This helps to defray the costs for those smaller societies for whom the dues are a financial strain.
The 2008 tiered dues structure is as follows:
| Tier | Size | 2008 Dues Rate/Member |
| I | ≤100 | $11.25 |
| II | 100-199 | $11.75 |
| III | 199-499 | $12.25 |
| IV | 500-1999 | $12.75 |
| V | ≥2000 | $13.25 |
* Note the upcoming change to the 2009 dues tier structure shown below.
Each year, the member society treasurers determine the number of relevant members and reports this to the Federation as the basis for billing of the next year’s dues.
New Membership
The Federation is always pleased to expand its society membership base, and we understand that a new society requires time to assess our work and impact in Washington. We also understand that financial arrangements may take some time to work out and, to address that concern, the Federation offers a special introductory rate during the first few years of membership.
2009 Tiered Dues Structure
| Tier | Size | 2009 Dues Rate/Member |
| I | ≤500 | $12.25 |
| II | 500-1999 | $13.25 |
| III | ≥2000 | $13.75 |
The Federation Council voted to move to a collapsed tier dues structure which would replace the five tiers with a simpler 3-tier structure. This revised structure will go into effect starting with 2009 dues for all new and existing societies.
