Current Issues: Federation Addresses Animal Lab Vandalism
Federation Responds to Domestic Terrorism at University of Iowa (January 2005)
On November 14, 2004, the University of Iowa’s Department of Psychology animal labs were vandalized by members of the extremist Animal Liberation Front (ALF) group. Dozens of computers were destroyed, acid was poured on paper files, and approximately 400 research animals were removed from the premises in what we believe should be classified as an act of domestic terrorism. This crime has not been ignored: the Federal Bureau of Investigation was called in to investigate and the President of the University of Iowa has made public statements in defense of animal research. This past week, the Federation made sure its voice was also heard and sent a letter to the FBI, reiterating the importance of animal research and the need to protect the nation’s scientists from terrorist groups such as ALF. We also sent letters to Dr. Tom Insel (Director, National Institute of Mental Health) and Dr. Duane Alexander (Director, National Institute of Child Health and Human Development), whose institutes fund the research that was targeted at Iowa. We thanked each of them for their past and continued support of animal research.
