The Coalition for National Science Funding (CNSF) hosted the 14th annual Capitol Hill Exhibition and Reception on the evening of June 25th. This reception featured posters and presentations from a range of scientists currently receiving funding from the National Science Foundation. This year, the Federation was excited to sponsor Joshua Correll, PhD, from the University of Chicago. Dr. Correll’s Exhibit, titled, Police Officers & Racial Bias in the Decision to Shoot, was widely attended. Dr. Correll featured research measuring racial bias and its impact on the decision to shoot, in police officers and other members of the community. The CNSF Exhibition has proven a popular and successful event which attracts more attendees each year including Members of Congress, congressional staff, and National Science Foundation representatives. This year, over 400 attended the Exhibition, including Congresswoman Judy Biggert (R-IL), Congressman Vernon Ehlers (R-MI), Congressman Ralph Hall (R-TX), Congressman Rush Holt (D-NJ), Congressman Dennis Kucinich (D-OH), Congressman Jim Moran (D-VA), and Congressman David Price (D-NC). Others who visited Dr. Correll’s booth included Kathie Olsen, PhD (Deputy Director, National Science Foundation), Felice Levine (Executive Director, American Educational Research Association), Howard Silver, PhD (Executive Director, Consortium of Social Science Associations), Steven Breckler, PhD (Executive Director, American Psychological Association Science Directorate), Lee Herring (Director of Public Affairs & Public Information, American Sociological Association) and many others with an interest in the research NSF is funding and it’s political impact.
The exhibition hosted 31 exhibitors from all walks of science, including astronomy, physics, biology, oceanography, engineering, and much more. Other Federation societies that participated were the American Psychological Association who hosted David Krantz, PhD and presented Psychological Science and Environmental Decision-Making and the American Educational Research Association who presented Using Tablet PCs and Smartphone Technology to Support STEM Learning, with Lisa B. Elliot, PhD and Pamela Francis.
