The 10th annual Capitol Hill Exhibition for NSF-funded research was held on the evening of June 22nd, sponsored by the Coalition for National Science Funding (CNSF). The Federation is a member of CNSF and hosted Dr. Wendy Rogers, President-Elect of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society (HFES). Also present were graduate student Anne McLaughlin, who collaborates with Rogers on this research, and Betty Sanders, President of HFES. Dr. Rogers presented her work on the Aware Home, an interdisciplinary initiative that aims to improve home design and technology for aging adults. Some of the attendees who stopped by Rogers' exhibit (several of whom are pictured on this page), include: Arden Bement, Acting Director - National Science Foundation, Joseph Bordogna, Deputy Director - National Science Foundation, Wanda Ward, Acting Director for Social, Behavioral, and Economic Sciences at NSF, John Marburger, Director - Office of Science and Technology Policy (White House), Congressman Ralph Regula (R-OH), and Congressman Vern Ehlers (R-MI).
Also representing the behavioral sciences was the American Psychological Association (APA), featuring Dr. Mark Frank (Rutgers University) and his work on the ability to detect deception from facial expressions. We believe it is extremely important for the behavioral sciences to be highlighted at such important events and that this kind of exposure is helpful to all behavioral scientists in the Federation. Only four of the 34 exhibits were from the behavioral sciences, making the participation of groups like the Federation and APA crucial.
Final counts reveal that over 370 people attended the event, making it the most successful CNSF exhibition to date. Attendees included Members of Congress and their staffs and key personnel from the National Science Foundation and the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, among others.
